Man Utd boss Mourinho refutes tax fraud accusations

Jose Mourinho's advisers have hit back at accusations that the Manchester United manager failed to pay millions of euros in taxes to the Spanish authorities during his time in charge of Real Madrid.

The 54-year-old Portuguese, who coached Madrid from 2010 to 2013, has been accused of "two offences against the public treasury", the prosecutor's office said in a statement on Tuesday.

They claim that Mourinho, who took over at United last year, failed to declare 3.3 million euros ($3.7m, £2.9m) during his time in the Spanish capital -- 1.6 million euros in 2011 and 1.7 million euros in 2012.

But a statement released by Mourinho's representatives Gestifute Media said he had not been informed personally of the accusations.

They also circulated a copy of a tax document dated July 3, 2015, which covers the period in question.

According to Gestifute, Mourinho "paid more than 26 million euros in taxes, at an average rate above 41 percent and accepted regularisation proposals from the tax authorities in 2015 relating to the years 2011 and 2012, and resolved by agreement his situation for the year 2013".

The statement also said that Mourinho had received a certificate from the authorities confirming that he was "up to date with all his tax obligations".

The accusations come as Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was summoned to appear before a judge next month, accused of tax evasion of 14.7 million euros.

The 32-year-old Portuguese star is facing four charges of fraud through offshore companies between 2011 and 2014 and will appear before a judge on July 31, judicial sources told AFP.

The four-time world player of the year, who said last week his "conscience is clear", is threatening to leave Madrid over the affair, according to Spanish and Portuguese media.

- Mendes in eye of storm -
Both Ronaldo and Mourinho are clients of football super-agent Jorge Mendes, who has been summoned to appear before the court at Pozuelo de Alarcon, just outside Madrid, on June 27.

Revelations from the whistleblowing website Football Leaks have lifted the veil on the practices supposedly used by Mendes to optimise often enormous earnings from image rights by his clients.

Media consortium European Investigative Collaborations (EIC) has claimed that no less than 185 million euros worth of income has escaped the attentions of tax authorities using shell companies and offshore accounts.

Other clients of Mendes who have ended up in Spain include the Portuguese full-back Fabio Coentrao -- on the verge of joining Sporting Lisbon on loan from Real Madrid -- and Colombian striker Radamel Falcao, now with Monaco but formerly at Atletico Madrid.

Falcao himself is suspected of failing to correctly declare 5.6 million euros of income earned from image rights between 2012 and 2013 while he was at Atletico.

Coentrao is suspected of failing to correctly declare 1.3 million euros of income.

In three years with Real Madrid, Mourinho won La Liga in 2012 and the Spanish Cup in 2011.

After leaving Madrid, he returned to England for a second spell with Chelsea before joining United, with whom he won the Europa League and the League Cup in the season just finished.

The football world in Spain has been rocked by charges of tax evasion or corruption pressed against some of its other leading stars.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi was sentenced to a 21-month jail sentence and 2.09 million euro fine last year for tax fraud.

The prison term will be suspended as is common in Spain for first offences for non-violent crimes carrying a sentence of less than two years.

The 29-year-old and his father Jorge Horacio Messi were found guilty of using offshore companies to avoid paying taxes on 4.16 million euros of Messi's income earned from his image rights from 2007 to 2009.

Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano also agreed a one-year suspended sentence with authorities for tax fraud last year.

Meanwhile Brazil star and Barcelona forward Neymar and his parents are due to stand trial for alleged corruption over his transfer from Santos in 2013.

Banned Valcke gets October CAS appeal date

Former FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke will have his appeal over his 10 year ban from football heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on October 11.

Sepp Blatter's former righthand man was suspended in September 2015 over the 2014 World Cup tickets scam and was sentenced by FIFA's ethics committee in February 2016 to a 12-year ban from football.

The ban was reduced to ten years on appeal before Valcke, claiming innocence, appealed to CAS.

"The hearing has been set for October 11, it's too soon to know if he will actually appear in person however," a CAS spokesman told AFP on Wednesday.

Once disgraced FIFA president Blatter's chief lieutenant, Valcke was sacked by FIFA over black market World Cup ticket sales and suspect television deals.

The 56-year-old, who has resettled in Barcelona where he and his wife set up an events management firm, is also the target of a Swiss criminal investigation into the resale of World Cup tickets.

Blatter was banned for six years on charges relating to a two million Swiss francs (1.8 million Euros) payment to the UEFA chief Michel Platini.

FIFA in September launched a fresh investigation into conflict of interest and corruption against Blatter, Valcke and ex FIFA financial director Markus Kattner.

FIFA believe the three men may have shared around 75 million euros in pay rises in a coordinated effort at self enrichment, which the three deny.

"She was making some funny sound" - Man separates from wife for `enjoying s3x’ with armed robbers

A Benue State-born man (name withheld) has sacked his newly married wife because she was making some ‘funny moaning’ sounds while being raped by armed robbers in his presence.

According to reports, the incident played out in the couple’s residence on Bello Street in the Iyana-Ejigbo area of Lagos State, when armed robbers visited them in the death of night few months after they came back from their village where they had conducted their traditional marriage.

It was learned that after the heavily armed gunmen invaded Baba Eneh’s house around 3 am and demanded money, the native of Owukpa, Ogadigbo Local Government Area of Benue allegedly told the gunmen that he had only N3, 500 at home.

The man, a commercial bus driver, reportedly begged the robbers that he did not have much money at home since he had expended all his savings on marrying his new wife and they were just trying to settle down.

But the robbers who were angry that the man did not have much money at home, decided to gang-rape his wife at gunpoint and descended on her.

However, when the robbers left after raping the woman, the commercial driver was said to have raised hell, accusing his wife of enjoying the rape by moaning in excitement and twisting her waist as the robbers sexually assaulted her, instead of screaming for help.

He was quoted as telling his neighbours:

“Imagine my wife, instead of her to cry for help, she was busy making some funny sounds, an indication that she was enjoying the s*x, even in my presence.”

He was said to have ordered the woman out of his house on the ground that she disgraced him as it is against the customs of his community for a married woman to have s*x with another man.

The man is said to be afraid of what the gods of his land will do to him and has asked the wife to return to her village for the cleansing rites and sacrifices to be made.

Etisalat Takeover: NCC assures subscribers of network’s integrity

Amid the move to takeover of Etisalat by a consortium of banks, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assured subscribers that the network’s integrity would not compromised.

The Director, Public Affairs of NCC, Mr Tony Ojobo, said in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos that the commission’s attention had been drawn to the planned takeover by the consortium of banks.

Ojobo said that the regulatory body was aware of the indebtedness of Etisalat to the consortium.

According to him, the NCC in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has mediated by holding several meetings with the banks, Etisalat and other stakeholders to find a solution.

“Regrettably, these meetings did not yield the desired results.

“The NCC wishes to reassure about 21 million Etisalat subscribers that it will do all within its regulatory power to ensure that Etisalat subscribers continue to enjoy the services provided by the operator.

“The commission has taken proactive steps to cushion the impact of the takeover; this is without prejudice to the ongoing effort between Etisalat and the banks toward a negotiated settlement.

“NCC wishes to reassure all stakeholders in the telecommunications sector, in particular the subscribers on the Etisalat network, that it will ensure that the integrity of the network is not compromised.’’

The statement said the commission had drawn the attention of the banks to provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003 Section 38: Sub-sections 1 and 2.

“Sub-section 1 says: the grant of a license shall be personal to the licensee.

“The license shall not be operated by, assigned, sub-licensed or transferred to another party unless the prior written approval of the commission has been granted;

“Sub-section 2 says: A licensee shall at all times comply by the terms and condition of the licence and the provision of this act and its subsidiary legislation,’’ it said.

The director said that while the banks and Etisalat were working at resolving the issues, the commission assured that subscribers would continue to enjoy the services provided by the telecommunications company.

In March, a consortium of 13 banks, both foreign and Nigerian, had wanted to take over the operations of Etisalat over a loan facility totalling 1.2 billion dollars, obtained in 2015.

The banks said their attempt to recover the loan was due to the pressure from the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), demanding immediate cut down on the rate of non-performing loans.

The NCC and CBN waded into the matter to ensure an amicable resolution of the issue.

However, after three months of fruitless deliberations, the consortium of banks is finally taking over the telecommunications company.

Suspected Boko Haram attack kills 2 in Maiduguri-Damboa highway

The Police command in Borno has confirmed the death of two persons in a suspected Boko Haram attack along the Maiduguri-Damboa highway.

Mr Damian Chukwu, the Borno Police Commissioner, who confirmed this on Tuesday said that the dead persons included a police man and a truck driver.

“You would recall that since the Maiduguri-Damboa highway was reopened, motorists ply the road strictly on military escort.

“Initially it was only the military that provides the escort, but later the police was invited to join,” Chukwu said.

He said that the convoy left Maiduguri with the military in the front while the police was at the rear.

“The convoy had about 200 vehicles among which included an 80-seater bus conveying a newly deployed Mobile Police Unit from Oghara in Delta heading for Askira Uba one of the newly liberated communities.

“The convoy also had a burial party of a late Special Investigation Bureau police woman who died last week,” Chukwu said.

He added:”The convoy started moving around 10:30 pm and by 11:30 we got information that they were ambushed around Abari-Dalwa village about 30 kilometres from Maiduguri.

“Six of the Mobile Police Men in the bus were injured, but as I speak to you they are responding to treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital”.

Chukwu said that non of the policemen lost their weapons to the attackers.

He, however, said that a policeman in the vehicle conveying the burial party for the deceased policewoman died during the attack.

“A police Sgt. Bala Tiishe was killed in the vehicle.

“A civilian, Mustapha Modu, driving a truck conveying drugs for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) was also killed,” Chukwu said.

He said all other policemen in the convoy were unhurt.

Some eyewitnesses told newsmen in Maiduguri that the convoy was ambushed around Dalwa village by suspected terrorists using anti aircraft guns and heavy weapons.

Malam Bala Wambai, a traveller who witnessed the attack, said that the attack happened around 11:30.

“The terrorists decided to attacked the convoy from the rear after the military escort had passed around Dalwa.

“They specifically targeted a Borno State Government school bus conveying some mobile policemen,” Wambai said.

He said a number of police men were injured in the attack which lasted about 30 minutes.

“Our vehicle was just few meters away from the bus conveying the police men, so we all ran into the bush for cover.

“When we came back we discovered that a large number of them were injured while many were missing,” Wambai said.

Mr John Yusuf, another traveller, said that the attackers were eventually chased away by a combined team of soldiers and policemen who responded to distress calls by the victims.

“We saw them evacuating two corpses after the attack,” Yusuf said.

Fuel marketers demand payment of outstanding subsidy claims

The Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) has appealed to the Federal Government to pay the outstanding fuel subsidy claims to its members to pay back their bank loans.

The Executive Secretary of the Association, Mr Obafemi Olawore, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

NAN reports that some oil marketers had on June 18 appealed to the Federal Government to pay their outstanding debts of two billion dollars (N720 billion) owed on the importation of petrol products and the accrued interests on bank loans.

Olawore said that the immediate payment of the accumulated subsidy claims would salvage the banks from total collapse over the huge debts owed them by marketers.

According to him, the delay in repayment of the loan debts owed the banks by marketers had led to retrenchment in the banking and the oil and gas sectors.

“We (marketers) are afraid that if the money is not paid on time, this may attract the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to take over our businesses.

“The debts had imparted grossly on marketers, while only very few marketers are presently importing insignificant quantity of petroleum products into the country,’’ he said.

Olawore said that the plea was to avert the scarcity of petroleum products in the country. The executive secretary said that inability of the marketers to import fuel had impacted negatively on loading activities at the Apapa and Dockyard private depots.

Olawore said that the NNPC had become the sole importer of petroleum products, while marketers were queuing to get the products on credit. He said that the Federal Government paid over N300 million daily as fuel subsidy.

Olawore said that anytime there was problem in the banking sector, it was always traced to the oil sector, because of the unpaid loans collected by marketers borrowed.

“Once we (marketers) are unable to pay, the banks will have problems,’’ he said.

Olawore said that some banks might be having problem with their correspondence banks abroad due to the unpaid loans.

“This can have negative effects on the financial sector’s stability, which is not good for the economy.

“A situation where the banks are being owed N800 billion constitute major threat to the continuous existence of the sector,’’ he said.

Heavyweights Germany, Chile clash at Confederation Cup

Germany and Chile clash for control of Group B at the Confederations Cup on Thursday with die Mannschaft's head coach Joachim Loew talking up the south American champions.

"They have shown in the past few years that they belong to the elite of world football," said German boss Loew ahead of the encounter in Kazan, Russia.

"Chile have fantastic individual players and are flexible tactically like few other teams, they can switch things around several times during a match."

Both teams have three points with Chile ahead on goal difference after their 2-0 win over Cameroon and Germany's 3-2 victory against Australia.

Loew, having rested all of his World Cup-winning stars, will match his young guns against an experienced Chile team which won both the 2015 and 2016 Copa America titles.

Both sides are amongst the favourites to win the 2017 Confed Cup in the St Petersburg final on July 2.

"They are the rival that will give us a good idea of what we can accomplish here," said Chile's Edson Puch, who started in place of Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez against Cameroon.

Regardless of their inexperience -- the entire Germany squad had just 149 caps between them -- Marcelo Diaz said facing the world champions requires a certain mind set.

"In order to play them, we need to be psychologically prepared, at your best, and we are," said the midfielder.

"Our mentality is one of our biggest achievements of this team."

Loew changed his goalkeeper in each of his last three games and Germany's shot-stopper Bernd Leno could lose his place having leaked two goals against Australia.

Chile's Arturo Vidal opened the scoring against Cameroon and he is set to face three Bayern Munich team-mates in Joshua Kimmich, Sebastian Rudy and Niklas Suele.

Likewise, Arsenal team-mates Shkodran Mustafi and Sanchez could line up against each other.

Germany have won all four meetings between the countries in the last 40 years.

The most recent was in 2014 when Mario Goetze's goal sealed a 1-0 friendly win in Stuttgart.

In Thursday's other Group B game, Australia play Cameroon in St Petersburg with both teams knowing they can ill afford another Confed Cup defeat.

"Australia play with a lot of fighting spirit and I expect a difficult game against a team with a different style to Chile," said Cameroon's Belgian coach Hugo Broos.

"We will have to be at our top level, because if we lose we are done at this tournament."

Broos is expected to stick with the same line-up which leaked late goals by Vidal and Eduardo Vargas against Chile.

After a quiet opening match, Christian Bassogog – the player of the tournament at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations – will be keen to shine on the right wing.

Having conceded early goals against both Brazil, in last week's 4-0 friendly defeat, and Germany, Australia coach Ange Postecoglou will want to tighten his defence.

Likewise, talented midfielder Aaron Mooy will be expected to help maintain possession in the middle, an area where Australia struggled against Germany.

Murray faces confidence crisis after Queen's shocker

Andy Murray admits he will have to improve dramatically to mount a successful defence of his Wimbledon title after the world number one suffered an embarrassing Queen's Club exit.

Murray crashed to one of the worst defeats of his glittering career on Tuesday as Australian world number 90 Jordan Thompson ended his reign as Queen's champion with an astonishing 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 first round victory.

Making the 30-year-old's humiliation even worse, Thompson, originally beaten in the qualifying rounds, was only playing as a last minute replacement for the injured Aljaz Bedene.

It was the worst possible preparation for Wimbledon, with the grass-court Grand Slam set to get under way on July 3.

Having reached the French Open semi-finals earlier this month, Murray must have hoped he was back on track after his poor run during an injury-plagued first half of the season.

But instead the three-time Grand Slam winner plans to go back to the practice courts with coach Ivan Lendl in a last-ditch bid to find a solution to his struggles.

"I said before the tournament there was still a lot of work to be done, and after the French Open I knew that I was still quite far from where I needed to be," Murray said.

"One tournament doesn't change all of what had gone on just beforehand. So that's why I got back on the practice court quite soon after the French.

"But I was certainly feeling better in the build-up here than I was going into the French. I would have expected to have played and done a bit better."

Murray has now failed to get past the second round in three of his last four tournaments. and has lost before the quarter-finals six times this year.

It is a remarkable crisis for a player who just eight months ago was sitting on top of the world after a golden year that including titles at Wimbledon, the Olympics and the ATP Tour Finals.

- Confidence factor -
Murray looks bereft of form and focus at present and he conceded a lack of confidence was a factor.

"I don't feel like loads of my game has changed, but obviously right now I'm not playing as well as I was 12 months ago," he said.

"Most of that comes down to confidence in matches. It's not so much that I have changed my serve or my technique.

"It's just when you're playing a lot of matches and winning consistently helps you make better decisions at important moments.

"Hopefully I get enough time on the court to work on some things, because I'm going to need to.

"If I play like that, I certainly won't win Wimbledon, but I can play better than that."

Murray has traditionally been at his most formidable on grass and his two Wimbledon titles in 2013 and 2016 were both preceded by Queen's Club triumphs.

Conceding that a lack of match practice on grass was a problem, Murray said he would consider adding some exhibition matches to his schedule next week.

"This tournament has given me great preparation in the past, and when I have done well here, Wimbledon has tended to go pretty well, too," Murray said.

"It's not ideal obviously, but guys have in the past have gone in to Wimbledon having not won lots of matches.

"Novak (Djokovic) a number of times hasn't played any warmup tournaments and played very well there.

"I feel like I can still do very well at Wimbledon, but it certainly would have helped to have had more matches."

Murray's exit overshadowed his generous offer to donate in tournament prize money to the victims of the London tower-block fire that killed an estimated 79 people.

"I would have liked to have done well here for a number of reasons, that being a very good one," he said.

Notorious human trafficker arrested in Edo

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) said it has arrested a 45-year-old woman, Rhoda Omorogie, alias Mama Bobo, for her alleged involvement in the trafficking of young girls from Benin to Europe.

The NAPTIP Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr Josiah Emerole, said in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja that the operatives of the agency in Benin Zonal Command arrested the suspect in an early morning operation on Tuesday.

Emerole explained that Omorogie, a nurse by profession and an indigene of Oredo Local Government Area of Edo, was nabbed by the operatives at about 5 a.m at her residence located at No. 65 Osayande St. off Upper Sakponda Road, Benin City.

He said that the suspected trafficker had been in hiding since June 16 following the arrest of one of her gang members, Monday Ugbo, by NAPTIP operatives and rescue of three victims.

According to him, the “notorious trafficker’’ is presently in NAPTIP’s custody for interrogation.

The spokesperson stated that preliminary reports showed that Omorogie has over the years been involved in the recruitment of young women from Benin to other places including Europe.

He said the report also revealed that she was connected to the recruitment of the three victims that were rescued in Benin at the weekend.

Emerole quoted the Director-General of NAPTIP, Mrs Julie Oka-Donli, saying that it is disheartening to see women involved in the “disgusting trade of human beings’’.

She however stressed the need for people to be more careful while dealing with traffickers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recall Ugbo was nabbed by NAPTIP operatives at the weekend and rescued three victims from his residence located at number 72 Osayande St., Upper Sakponba Road, Benin City, Edo.

Ugbo was arrested in the process of receiving a registration fee of N50,000 he had demanded from a prospective victim and preparing to take the victims to a River for oath taking.

Cristiano Ronaldo: Five reasons why he can make Man Utd great again

Real Madrid's Portuguese striker Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates next to the trophy after Real Madrid won the UEFA Champions League final football match between Juventus and Real Madrid at The Principality Stadium in Cardiff, south Wales, on June 3, 2017. JAVIER SORIANO / AFP

I had previously written about why I felt that Real Madrid should never let go of Cristiano Ronaldo and I stated out my points clearly. Madrid President, Florentino Perez was supposed to speak with the player and confirm or deny the rumours about his purported desire to leave Madrid and Spain, however, Perez has come out to say that he has not yet spoken with the Portuguese but will do so after the Confederations Cup.

This development has done little to squash the rumours still swirling around and instead has added more fuel to the fire. If Ronaldo does leave Madrid this summer his most likely destination will be a return to Old Trafford and Manchester United according to reports making the rounds.

This scenario is one that a lot of Manchester United fans have been hoping and praying for and it will be the realization of a dream if it happens. The second coming of Cristiano Ronaldo to Manchester will bring a lot of things to this current Manchester United side and below are five reasons why I think it will make the club great again if it happens.

FEAR FACTOR
One major thing that Manchester united has lost since the retirement of the great Sir Alex Ferguson has been the fear factor the team used to have. Most opposing sides at Old Trafford already felt defeated before the blast of the whistle in times past and damage limitation was their main aim. The arrival of Jose Mourinho and Zlatan Ibrahimovic brought back a bit of the fear factor; however, if Cristiano Ronaldo makes a return to the club he will most certainly increase that losing feeling in potential opponents when they come up against Manchester United and this will help the club on its way to regaining some of its lost glory.

INSPIRATION
This present Manchester United team boasts of a lot of young talents and potential world beaters like Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Josh Harrop and Angel Gomez. The return of Ronaldo to Old Trafford will definitely inspire these youngsters to go on and fulfill their potentials. Training daily with a player as decorated as him and seeing him turn it up on matchdays will only serve to make them want to be as great as the Portuguese and that in turn will benefit Manchester United now and in the long run.

WINNING MENTALITY/WORK RATE
Cristiano Ronaldo won a three EPL titles, a League Cup, a UCL title and the Club World Cup in his last three years at Manchester United, that’s more than Manchester United have won in the last four years. Since then, he has added a ton of titles and has personally won more than the club in the past four years. The man mostly wins and wants to keep winning and will do his best to bring that mentality to Manchester united if he makes a return to the club. He backs up his desire for success with an unbelievable work rate which mostly gives him and his teams the needed results

COMPETITIVENESS
For a player that has achieved so much already and is arguably the greatest player in the history of the game, his desire to strive for more and keep on breaking records is unrivalled. He was runner up to Lionel Messi in the Ballon D’or votes for four consecutive years and kept on striving to match the Argentine and baring any surprise he will match Messi’s total tally of five when the award will be handed out this year. That level of competitiveness is what he will be bringing with him to Manchester United if he returns and that will automatically make the team more competitive.

GOALS
Manchester united have been dire in front of goal in recent seasons, in fact, in the 2015/2016 season, the team scored a total of 49 goals in the league, while Ronaldo scored 48 league goals in the previous season for Real Madrid. Since he left Manchester United, Ronaldo has scored more goals than games played for Real Madrid with 407 goals in 394 appearances, becoming the record goal scorer for the team in the process. He will be bringing his goals with him to Manchester and that will help the club in its quest to regain its position as one of the top teams in the world. Ronaldo scored 118 goals in his first spell at Manchester United and the lure of breaking Wayne Rooney’s club record of 253 goals and becoming the greatest goal scorer at two of Europe’s heavyweights will only serve to inspire him to plunder in the goals for the Manchester United.

Amuneke out of Barcelona-Manchester United clash

Retired Nigeria international Emmanuel Amuneke says he won’t be available for selection when his former team Barcelona tackle Manchester United Legends in a charity game at the Camp Nou on Friday, June 30.

Barcelona Legends coach Jose Mari Bakero can count on the services of Edmílson, Giuly, Belletti, Mendieta, Julio Salinas and Goikoetxea, among others for the game against the Red Devils.

Amuneke has explained that he can’t participate in the game because he is in Nigeria at the moment.

‘’It is not that they didn’t invite me for the game against Manchester United, I am in Nigeria now, I will not be available so I can’t play,’’ Emmanuel Amuneke said, when asked to confirm his participation.

FIFA clear Manchester United, target Juventus over Pogba deal

PHOTO:AFP

FIFA have cleared Manchester United but opened disciplinary proceedings against Juventus over Paul Pogba's world record transfer, football's governing body announced on Wednesday.

The France midfielder returned to United in a deal worth more than $111 million, 105.2 million euros) in August 2016 from the Italian giants.

In May FIFA began an inquiry into the move, requesting information about the headline transfer from United.

But in a statement FIFA confirmed that while United were in the clear of any wrongdoing, they were taking action against Juventus.

"We can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Juventus FC.

"We can also confirm that no disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Manchester United," the statement said.

It added: "As proceedings are ongoing please understand we cannot comment further at this stage."

Pogba's move came under particular scrutiny amid reports the player's agent Mino Raiola would earn some 49 million euros from the deal.

Raiola is suspected of a conflict of interest, as he was at the time agent for Pogba, Juventus and Manchester United.

In May, French website Mediapart, quoting the Football Leaks documents, claimed: "Pogba in reality cost 127 million euros to Manchester United with 49 millions going into Raiola's pockets and only 78 millions into Juve's bank account."

According to the investigative site, Raiola "didn't appear to let Manchester United know that he was also working for Juventus," an arrangement that is outlawed under English rules.

Pogba, 24, started his career with United but made just three appearances in the Premier League before heading to Italy, after an apparent falling out with then manager Alex Ferguson.

He flourished in Serie A, winning four league titles with Juventus between 2012 and 2016.

Pogba appeared in the 2015 Champions League final, which Juventus lost 3-1 to Barcelona.

At the same time, the powerful midfielder made himself a mainstay of the French national team.

He made his debut in March 2013, just a week after his 20th birthday, in a World Cup qualifier against Georgia.

He also featured as part of the 2014 French World Cup squad and was named the tournament's best young player.

Pogba's performances at the 2016 European Championship helped attract the attention of his former club Manchester United, under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Last season he helped propel United to a first ever Europa League title, scoring in his team's 2-0 victory over Ajax in Stockholm on May 25.

I’m more Nigerian than Anthony Joshua – Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury has hit back at Anthony Joshua for calling him “boring” – but saying he is “more Nigerian”.

The two continue to angle for a “Battle of Britain” heavyweight domestic clash – but it’s clearly only at the “trash-talking” stage at the minute.

Speaking to Sky Sports about Fury’s points win over Wladimir Klitschko back in 2015, Joshua said,  “He didn’t throw a punch. He didn’t come to fight. He just walked around the ring for like 12 rounds, it’s boring. It’s not winning, it’s how you win.”

Joshua climbed off the canvas in April to record a stunning 11th round stoppage victory against Wladimir Klitschko to add the WBA and IBO titles to his IBF strap.

But Fury has hit back, in somewhat strange circumstances.

Sharing a video on Instagram, he captioned it, “I’m more Nigerian than you! I’ll fly the flag for Nigeria when we fight.

“Gypsy man represents the world.”

In the video which the self-titled “gypsy king” shared on Instagram, he said,  “I see AJ is talking again, saying my fight was boring.

“Better to win and be boring than to get dropped all over the floor and scraping a win.”

Uyo remains Super Eagles home - Rohr

The proposed plan of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to move the Super Eagles World Cup 2018 qualifiers from the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo has been rejected by coach Gernot Rohr.

Issues regarding logistics and attitude of the crowd made the NFF toy with the idea of moving Super Eagles’ home games from the stadium, amidst reports of the stadium being placed under a spell by aggrieved residents of the land, who are claiming their land was forcefully taken away from them to build the stadium.

Nigeria lost her last game at the stadium to South Africa 0-2 in their first AFCON 2019 qualifier, and their next competitive game which will be against Cameroon in the race to be at the World Cup 2018 was rumoured to have been shifted from the ground.

However, Super Eagles gaffer Gernot Rohr has kicked against the idea of moving the team from the Godswill Akpabio Stadium insisting it will affect the psychology of the players, who have taken the venue as their home.

”I am in constant touch with the team’s captain, Mikel Obi and other senior players and they all agree that the team remains in Uyo to finish all qualifiers. Changing the venue will put the boys under pressure. The players are at home with Uyo fans”, Rohr stated.

The coach insist that the pitch didn’t contribute to his team’s loss against South Africa as speculated by many, and wants them to remain in Uyo to finish both the World Cup 2018 and AFCON 2019 qualifiers as well.

Kelechi Emeteole, former coach of Rangers, Heartland dead

A top Nigerian coach, Kelechi Emeteole, is dead.

The former Heartland coach died in the early hours of Wednesday in an Indian hospital after battling with cancer of the throat.

He passed on before a corrective surgery could be performed on him.

Media officer of Heartland, Solomon Onu, confirmed the development.

“Kelechi Emeteole has passed on. Just spoke with his wife. I woke up to see 13 missed calls and quickly grabbed the phone”, he told Premium Times.

“The wife broke the bad news and I’m devastated. I spoke to the wife on Monday and she even called me back through WhatsApp video call.

“I saw coach on a bed receiving a drip getting ready for the surgery to remove the pipe on his neck. He waved at me, little did I know it was a sad goodbye wave.”

Fondly called ‘Caterpillar’ during his days in the national team, Emeteole managed Heartland FC, Enugu Rangers and El Kanemi in the Nigeria Premier League.

Iheanacho set to stay in Manchester City

Kelechi Iheanacho looks set to stay at Manchester City amid growing interest from Premier League mid-table clubs West Ham, Everton, Swansea City, Leicester City and Crystal Palace.

The Super Eagles forward struggled to find consistent minutes at the Etihad Stadium last season as the arrival of Brazilian wonderkid Gabriel Jesus pushed him out of the spotlight, with the Citizens manager Pep Guardiola preferring his partnership with Sergio Aguero up front

Iheanacho, 20, started only five Premier League games in 20 appearances — scoring four goals.

His failure to make any meaningful impact as Man City struggled to a third-place finish in the Premier League – and Guardiola’s reported move to sign either wantaway Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang or Monaco hotshot Kylian Mbappe during the summer transfer market – has left a dark cloud hanging over Iheanacho’s future at the club.

The Citizens are said to be ready to offload their Nigerian import to make room for a new striker signing this summer, but the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup Golden Ball winner, whose contract at the Etihad side expires in 2021, is said to have told the club that he would stay and fight for his place in Guardiola’s side.

Following West Ham’s inability to convince Iheanacho, who Man City value at £20m, to move to East London, Crystal Palace, Everton, Swansea and Leicester have been linked with the player ever since.

But family sources told our correspondent that the former Taye Academy star would only leave the Premier League giants for a big club.

Sources revealed that the player, who earns a reported £85,000 per week at Man City, is not ready to take a wage cut as the clubs who have shown an interest in his services are not in a position to match what he earns at the Eithad outfit.

Former Nigeria captain Henry Nwosu, who is close to the player and his family, also confirmed that Iheanacho won’t leave the Citizens in the summer.

“I met his brother in Owerri and he told me that the reports that Iheanacho will move to another club to enable him to get playing time are not true,” the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner told our correspondent on the telephone.

“I’m sure the player will stay at Man City to fight for his place next season.

“He’s a good player, but I think the coach is playing him out of position.

“If the coach allows him to play as a support striker or as a midfielder, he will get best out of him.”

Meanwhile, Iheanacho said last month he had no intention to quit Man City in the summer, saying he was already preparing for next season.

“I’m happy to stay at Manchester City and keep fighting to help them achieve what they want to achieve. Manchester City is a big team and we need to go far as a squad, so we need everybody,” he told the club’s official website.

Police rescue ‘tortured’ boy from father over missing N2000

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 41-year-old man, Adeoye Oreyomi, for allegedly torturing his 13-year-old son, Demola.

Oreyomi, a resident of 9, Dokun Street, Ewuga in Sagamu, reportedly beat up his son, chained his legs and hands for allegedly stealing his N2,000.

The suspect was said to have stripped the teenager naked before putting him in chains.

Police spokesman Abimbola Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP), said neighbours filed a complaint when they feared the boy might die.

Following the compliant, Oyeyemi said policemen from Sagamu, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Moses Aduroja, went to the house and found the victim in a pool of his blood.

He said: “The boy was rescued and rushed to Owokoniran Hospital in Sagamu for medical attention, while his father was promptly arrested.

“Police Commissioner Ahmed Iliyasu has directed that the suspect be charged to court at the completion of investigation.

“He equally warned that the command would not tolerate any act of lawlessness from anybody.”

Kaduna dry port to boost export by $50b yearly, says El-Rufai

Managing Director, Inland Container Nigeria Limited, Ismail Yusuf (left), Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai,Executive Secretary/ CEO, Nigeria Shippers Council, Hassan Bello,  and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, at the final inspection of the Kaduna Dry Port…yesterday

The newly built Kaduna Inland Dry Port will boost the country’s export capacity by over $50 billion yearly.

The Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai disclosed this yesterday at the final inspection of the facility.

El-Rufai said the port would provide an easy process for the exportation of its beans worth about $50 billion.

He added that the state’s plans had reached an advanced stage to export beans to India, while other goods would be exported to various countries.

The facility, built by Inland Containers Nigeria Limited (ICNL) has the capacity to handle 29,000 tonnes of cargoes yearly and is estimated to generate no fewer than 5000 employment opportunities.

The maiden dry port in the country would receive cargo from Apapa Port in Lagos, through the railway and also export goods through the same channel.

He said the plan would largely reduce the congestion in Lagos ports, truck haulage and provides the ultimate relief for the busy Apapa road.

“We inherited this project from the previous administration and we support and did everything we could to make it work,” the governor said.

He enjoined the company to employ the local people to reduce unemployment in the state.

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, said his ministry would fully support the facility to achieve its employment opportunities and economic growth.

On railway, Amaechi said the project’s narrow gauge would be handed over to General Electric to bring in about 20 locomotives.

The Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers Council, Hassan Bello, commended the state for its support and promised to commission the project in less than three months.

According to him, more dry ports would be established in the country, even as the Jos project is about 65 per cent complete.

A dry port is an inland intermodal terminal directly connected by road or rail to a seaport and operating as a centre for the trans-shipment of sea cargo to inland destinations.

Court adjourns Shema’s ex parte motion till July 25

Former governor of Katsina State, Ibrahim Shema

A Katsina State High Court has adjourned till July 25, hearing on ex-Governor Ibrahim Shema’s ex parte motion to stop a commission of inquiry from submitting its report

Adjourning the hearing, Justice Maikaita Bako directed that the chairman of the commission, Ado Ma’aji and its members be served a notice of the hearing through the state Attorney General, Ahmed Elmarzuk.

Shema’s counsel, Uyi Igunma had told the court that the contents of the commission’s main report, “were more fabricated than a reality.”

He disclosed that the notice had already been served on the respondents, including Governor Aminu Bello Masari and the state attorney general.

The commission had last Saturday submitted its main report to the state government.

While submitting the main report, Ma’aji gave a breakdown of the funds alleged to be missing or unaccounted for during Shema’s regime.

According to him, N17.9 billion was missing from the SURE-P accounts, N15.4 billion from the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

Also cited was N14.9 billion for the state Roads Maintenance Agency, (KASROMA), N10.1 billion from the ministry of environment, departments of community development, special duties, girls child education and almajiri affairs.

Ma’aji explained that the N58.5 billion contained in the main report differ from the N55 billion stated in the interim report earlier submitted.

He said the difference was the outcome of a painstaking verification of the figures when the main report was being prepared.

Banks take over Etisalat over $1.2 billion debt

• ‘How restructuring will affect subscribers’
Lending bankers yesterday took over telecommunications company Etisalat and subsequently announced changes in the shareholding structure of the company.

Access Bank Plc and other Nigerian banks eventually took over the management of the company, effective June 15 after a protracted $1.2 billion debt impasse. Other lenders in the loan deal are Zenith Bank, GTBank, First Bank, UBA, Fidelity Bank, Ecobank, FCMB, Stanbic IBTC Bank and Union Bank.

A source privy to the arrangement told The Guardian that the affected banks had requested a new management of the telecoms firm.

While it is certain that there will be some job losses, (may not be in the immediate), and possible management changes, there are also worries in the industry about the fate of the 20 million customers on Etisalat’s network in Nigeria.

The Guardian learnt that Etisalat’s employees at different cadres were seen going about their normal duties at the major offices of the firm, including its Banana Island Head Office in Lagos yesterday.

Indeed, the takeover followed the collapse of efforts by Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services (EMTS), promoted by a former Chairman of UBA, Hakeem Bello-Osagie, to reach an agreement with the banks restructuring of the $1.2 billion debt.

EMTS Holding BV, established in the Netherlands, has up to June 23 to complete the transfer of 100 per cent of the company’s shares in Etisalat to the United Capital Trustees Limited, the legal representative of the consortium of banks.

Confirming the development in a statement signed by Etisalat Nigeria’s Vice President, Regulatory & Corporate Affairs, Ibrahim Dikko, the company said the operations and services to the subscribers remained normal and would in no way be affected.

“We continue to deliver quality services to our subscribers. We will continue to tap into the rich, creative and innovative resources within our workforce to build a stronger business upon the stable foundation we have laid in our nine years of operations.”

Dikko said Etisalat Nigeria had commenced its restructuring with changes to its shareholding. “As it had earlier stated in a release, the negotiations with the consortium of lenders are considering a number of possible options.

“Etisalat Nigeria can now confirm the first stage of this has begun with a change in shareholding which was announced to the Abu Dhabi Stock Exchange this morning (yesterday),” the statement said.

Etisalat Group, the parent company of Etisalat Nigeria, announced the takeover yesterday in a filing to the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirate.

The filing, with reference number Ho/GCFO/152/85, and dated June 20, 2017 signed by Etisalat Group Chief Financial Officer, Serkan Okandan, said efforts by EMTS to restructure the repayment of the syndicated loan by a consortium of banks to Etisalat Nigeria collapsed.

“Further to our announcement dated February 12, 2017, Emirates Telecommunications Group Company PJSC, ‘Etisalat Group’ would like to inform you that Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services Limited ‘EMTS’ established in Nigeria and an associate of Etisalat Group with effective ownership of 45 per cent and 25 per cent ordinary and preference shares respectively, defaulted on a facility agreement with a syndicate of Nigerian banks (EMTS Lenders).

“Subsequently, discussions between EMTS and the EMTS Lenders did not produce an agreement on a debt restructuring plan.

“Accordingly, the company received a default and security Enforcement Notice on 9 June 2017 requesting EMTS Holding BV (EMTS BV) established in the Netherlands, and through which Etisalat Group holds its interest in the company), requiring EMTS BV to transfer 100 per cent of its shares in the company to the United Capital Trustees Limited (‘the Security Trustee’) of the EMTS Lenders by 15 June 2017.

“Subsequently the EMTS Lenders extended the deadline for the share transfer to 5.00 pm Lagos time on 23 June 2017,” the filing said.

Expressing regret over the matter, the President of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), Olushola Teniola, said the focus on consumers and their ultimate choice should be paramount in the minds of all stakeholders during this difficult period for the shareholders of Etisalat.

Teniola affirmed that the ‘customer is king’ and that quality of service is key to the future shape and size of Etisalat.

“Investors, both domestic and international, will be watching very closely how our regulator is able to manage any fallout and the precedent this sets for the industry.

“ATCON has called for and reiterates a call for a competition czar to be created to deal with such issues raised over the last three months concerning takeovers, mergers and acquisitions in a sector that is critical to the future of our economy.”

A telecoms expert, Kehinde Aluko, told The Guardian that there shouldn’t be a problem with managing the 20 million subscribers, as the onus rests on the new management to handle the company better and progressively.

According to the Chairman, Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Gbenga Adebayo, the group is yet to receive a formal notification .

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has assured subscribers of network integrity of Etisalat.

In a statement by its Director of Public Affairs, Tony Ojobo, NCC said the commission was aware of the indebtedness of Etisalat to the consortium of banks, it mediated by holding several meetings with the banks, the telecoms company and other stakeholders with a view to finding a resolution. “Regrettably, these meetings did not yield the desired results,” it said.

The commission promised to do all within its regulatory power to ensure that subscribers continue to enjoy the services provided by the operator.

The Commission said it had taken proactive steps to cushion the impact of the takeover, this is without prejudice to the ongoing effort between Etisalat and the banks towards a negotiated settlement.

Worry for Nigeria’s budget as oil prices fall to seven-month low

Anxiety may have heightened on how to finance Nigeria’s 2017 budget as crude oil price volatility resumes with seven-month low.

Oil prices fell to seven-month low yesterday, after news of increases in supply by several key producers weakened the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) attempts to support the market through output freeze.

Benchmark Brent fell from $47.06 it sold on Monday to settle at $46.91 a barrel as at the early hours of Tuesday.

U.S. crude oil also decreased from $44.35 a barrel to $44.20, its lowest close since November 14, 2016.

In the 2017 budget, Nigeria’s executive arm set the crude oil benchmark at 2.2 million barrels per day at a price of $42.5 per barrel, before the senate pushed the benchmark to $44.5 a barrel with hopes that the black gold would stay around $50 a barrel.

But current realities at the global crude oil market however show that oil prices may fall below the current price as OPEC struggles with the United States shale oil and increase output from Nigeria and Libya.

Specifically, the nation generated about $114 million from the export of about two million barrels per day in May 2017, when prices stood at $57 per barrel.

With the current crude oil price put at $47.06 per barrel, Nigeria’s oil revenue has however dropped to $103.5 million, resulting to a loss of $11.5 million.

Experts believe that this drop in crude oil prices occasioned by over supply is not good for the Nigeria economy whose 2017 budget depends on revenue from hydrocarbon execute.

The Director-General, Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Muda Yusuf, called for a review of the entire budgetary process and to set timelines for every stage of the process.

Deputy-Director at Emerald Energy Institute for Energy & Petroleum Economics, Policy & Strategic Studies, University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Chijioke Nwaozuzu, stressed the need for Nigeria to secure significant new market share in the USA and India as a new source of revenue for the Nigerian treasury.

Head, Energy Research at Ecobank, Dolapo Oni said the current lower price trend is going to have a major effect on Nigeria if the trend continues, adding that the trend is likely to continue until the market adjusts the volume of oil supply available.

The decline in crude comes even as OPEC and other major oil producers have agreed to extend a production-limit pact into the first quarter of 2018, in order to stem the flow of oil, which has weighed mightily on crude futures.

U.S. shale oil drillers, who aren’t a part of the output agreement and increase in output from Nigeria and Libya have been cited as the main culprit disrupting OPEC’s efforts to stabilize oil prices.

OPEC supplies jumped in May as output recovered in Libya and Nigeria, both exempted from the production reduction agreement.

Libyan oil production this week is up by 200,000 to 300,000 bpd from early May while Nigeria is also pushing for an additional output of 200,000 bpd this month. The market is concerned that this will add to oversupply.

Already, exports of Nigeria’s benchmark Bonny Light crude oil are set to reach 226,000 bpd in August, up from 164,000 bpd in July, loading programmes show.

Giving reasons for the glut in the market, the U.S Energy Information Administration (EIA), said in a media statement yesterday, product supplied to the U.S. market as well as inventories and exports are also at relatively high levels.

International Energy Agency (IEA) believes that production from non-OPEC member will continue to affect prices.

IEA predicts that the output of non-OPEC members will outpace demand in 2018.

‘My presence at global IT forum attracted $4 billion to Nigeria’

Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu

The Minister of Communications, Adebayo Shittu, says his participation at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS Forum 2017) in Geneva, Switzerland has facilitated a $4 billion investment from India.

A statement quoted the minister as making the remarks during his presentation at the occasion showcasing the latent opportunities in the telecoms sub-sector of the nation’s economy.

He wooed investors to take a full advantage of Nigeria’s strategic position in Africa by doing profitable businesses with the nation.

According to him, renewed transparency as well as new capabilities and business ethos brought on board by the President Muhammadu Buhari administration were the impetus for timely returns on investments.

During a meeting with business moguls and key investors, a couple of Indian entrepreneurs, moved by the minister’s avowal, expressed readiness to pool resources in excess of $4 billion for investment in Nigeria’s telecoms sector with emphasis on rural telephony and grassroots development.

The statement, which informed that the two parties are due to meet next month to fine-tune the modalities, noted that other countries with technical expertise have equally indicated interest to assist the country in the area of satellite technology with a view to expanding the scope of the Nigerian Communications Satellite Limited (NIGCOMSAT).

Meanwhile, the proposed ICT University of Nigeria, one of the pet projects of the minister, has got global backing.

Shittu, at a meeting with Facebook’s Robert Pepper, a resource person at the conference, pledged Nigeria’s readiness for the earnest commencement of the institution.

The university, to be run on a multi -campus across the six geo-political zones, is to address the shortage of technocrats among other challenges in the industry.

Pepper assured the minister of his company’s full support, saying it falls within the confines of Facebook’s vision for Africa.

In related interactions with representatives of Google, Access Partnership, Microsoft Group, AT&T and other investors, Shittu also urged them to look in the direction of Nigeria, playing up her population and strategic position as the largest economy on the continent.

The minister used the occasion to invite institutional investors and resource persons for the Nigeria’s Smart Cities Summit 2017 holding in the first week of August in Abuja.

Nigeria loses N140 billion to Apapa gridlock weekly, says Dangote

The Federal Government last weekend handed over the troubled road to Dangote Industries Limited and Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc. (FMN) for immediate reconstruction with concrete overlay.

The President of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has lauded the decision of the Federal Government to reconstruct the failed Apapa-Wharf road.

With its grim state serving as an embarrassment to the country, there is also a huge loss of about N140 billion to the government on a weekly basis.

Dangote who spoke to select media men yesterday, said: “The economy loses more than N20 billion daily. It affects businesses across the country. All our operations in the hinterland in Ilorin, in Kano are operating at 40 per cent maximum capacity.”

Lamenting the state of roads in the country, Dangote said: “Today, there is no linkage road going from South West to the North. You have to go all the way through Ajaokuta, Obajana, Lokoja and you have to go by that uncompleted road Obasanjo started 13 years ago.‘’

Commenting on his resolve to be personally involved in the Apapa- Wharf road reconstruction, he said: “More than 60 per cent of our country’s import and exports come through the port and we leave it unattended. That is why we started on our own. Flour Mills said they will join us, but now government changed the design because they want all the cables and pipes underground and to have a more robust solution.”

To help in bringing the cost down, he explained that he forced his company to do it at a zero profit. According to him, “Both Dangote and Flour Mills are pumping in over N2.5 billion for the 2 kilometres double lane on each side making a total of 4 kilometres.”

He explained that the biggest job “is drainage because that is what is destroying the road. We will make sure this problem is sorted out once and for all. This thing should not be allowed to happen. We started discussion with the government over a year ago and we are happy that we have been given the opportunity to finally fix it.”

The Federal Government last weekend handed over the troubled road to Dangote Industries Limited and Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc. (FMN) for immediate reconstruction with concrete overlay.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by the FG, DIL, NPA and the FMN.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, signed the agreement for the handover of the road, on behalf of the Federal Government, while the Managing Director, NPA, Hadiza Usman, and Joseph Makoju, honorary advisor to Aliko Dangote, president, Dangote Group, and Gbedebo, signed for their respective organisations.

The three organisations are embarking on the project as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) to Apapa, where they all do business.

The construction work to be handled by AG Dangote, a civil construction company, and joint venture between Dangote Group and AG of Brazil, would utilise concrete slabs as against asphalt, common with road construction in this part of the world.

Managing director and chief executive of AG Dangote, Ashif Jumar in a chat with the media said: “We have already mobilised to site, but our major challenge is the chaotic Apapa traffic and the inclement rainy season. I appeal for patience and cooperation.”

Farmers rally in support of anti-grazing bill in Taraba

Breeders allege poisoning of cows in Nasarawa
Farmers in Taraba State have pledged their support for the anti-grazing bill currently at the state House of Assembly.

The farmers yesterday embarked on a peaceful demonstration to the assembly complex, carrying various farm implements.

They urged the people to support the lawmakers to give the bill an accelerated passage.

Acting under the umbrella of Farmers Protection Association (FPA), they said “the bill would bring a sustainable solution to the protracted land dispute in the state.”

According to the association’s Chairman, Ibrahim Bitrus: “The bill is the long awaited panacea to a problem that has defiled solution. We are totally in support of the deliberations on the bill and the public hearing to receive inputs to make it acceptable to all.”

They urged Governor Darius Ishaku to continue to provide the necessary incentives to farmers to make the state to “take its rightful position as the number one food basket and nature’s gift to the nation.”

The Speaker of the assembly, Peter Abel Diah told the farmers that the lawmakers would perform their duty as enshrined in the constitution.

Diah appealed to the farmers to attend the public hearing to make their contributions to the bill’s passage.

Meanwhile, a group from Benue south, under the aegis of “Concerned Citizen from Benue South Senatorial District’”has condemned the statement by the Miyetti Allah Kautai Hore, claiming ownership of Benue valley.

The group’s Chairman, Abba Yaro, told journalists that the cattle breeders’ claim was not only provocative but also, offensive to the spirit of the Nigerian Constitution

Yaro urged Governor Samuel Ortom to use all necessary legal means to resist any security breach in the state.

But in Nasarawa, the Chairman, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Hussaini has alleged that fishermen poisoned 155 cows belonging to its members in Akwanga Local Council Area.

He warned that the association would not tolerate the poisoning of cows’ source of water.

Hussaini cautioned against labeling all cattle breeders as Hausa or Fulani herdsmen, adding that all tribes, including the Yoruba, Nupe, Junkun or Beron all have their various cattle breeders associations.

Ubah leaves DSS custody after six weeks

Ubah

The Department of State Services (DSS) has released the chairman of Capital Oil and Gas Limited Ifeanyi, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah, after almost six weeks in detention over allegation of economic sabotage.

According to a report, he was released unconditionally on Monday night by the security agency.

Ubah was arrested on May 5 for allegedly diverting petrol kept in his tank farm in Lagos by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

The secret police said the product was worth N11 billion, adding that the alleged diversion was calculated to induce a fresh round of fuel scarcity in the country.

Igbo seek UN protection

• Want referendum in constitution
• IPOB flays Osinbajo’s comment on agitation
• Acting president warns quit notice givers, northern govs demand arrest

Perturbed by the October 1 quit order, an Igbo group, Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has appealed to the United Nations (UN) for protection for the easterners residing in the northern part of the country.

In a petition to the world body, the youths also called for a commencement of steps towards a referendum in Igbo land as the way to a peaceful separation of the people from the rest of Nigeria.

The petition entitled “A call for emergency in Nigeria –Our two-point demand”, they said, was in response to the letter to acting President Yemi Osinbajo by the Arewa youths, in which they insisted on the October 1 deadline for the Igbo to vacate the northern region.

They said the nation, from every indication, was “unworkable”, stressing that something serious needed to be done to avert bloodbath.

The petition signed by the group’s National President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike (national secretary), Amb. Arthur Obiora (deputy national president), Obinna Adobe (national publicity secretary) was copied to the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, the United States Embassy in Nigeria, United Kingdom Embassy, Commonwealth and the Amnesty International, among others.

According to the youths, the lives of Igbo people in every part of northern Nigeria are now “at a very high risk” despite the assurances of the various levels of government.

The petition obtained by The Guardian in Enugu reads in part: “It is with great concern that we alert the international community of (sic) the looming genocide against the Igbo in the northern part of Nigeria, occasioned by a well-orchestrated, carefully thought-after plot by the northern hierarchy, who are hiding under the Arewa youths.

“Their latest ranting, which they packaged as a letter to the Acting President has left no one in doubt as to their motive: A grand design to annihilate the Igbo race. This, they want to achieve so easily through the well packaged false history, which they have now dished out to gullible minds in order to create a passion (sic) hatred for the Igbo in the minds of their people and thereby easily achieve the October 1 planned mayhem against our people.

“How else could one justify their attempt to stab history in the back by labeling the first military coup in Nigeria as an Igbo coup? How else could people twist history than their justifying the pogrom against the Igbo between 1966 and 1967, which eventually led to the civil war? In what measure can one justify the insult on (sic) our late leaders, in the persons of Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi and Late (sic) Col. Chukwuemeka Odumewgu Ojukwu?

“In Igbo land, we have respect not only for the elders, but more so for the dead and it is for that purpose that we chose not to go further into this matter. Truth can never be changed. However, we must let these youths and their pay-masters know that contrary to their claims, our people have made much more sacrifices for the unity of this country, starting from the late Owelle of Onitsha, Nnamdi Azikiwe.

“To also justify their planned killing of every Igbo man remaining with the Biafra agitation amounts to hypocrisy of the highest magnitude. May we remind them for over a decade now, the Boko Haram did not just declare war on the Nigerian State but has gone ahead to seize territories, killed thousands and rendered millions of people homeless, yet nobody has branded it an action signed by the entire north. “Besides, like the Arewa youths pointed out in their hypocritical letter, the Biafra agitators have their demand for self-determination found in so many charters, including that of the UN, for which Nigeria is a signatory to. Where does the Boko Haram derive its own right to be engaging in mass murder?

“Our point here, however, is not on the propriety or otherwise of the attempt by Boko Haram to take over every Nigerian territory or the Biafra agitation, but the difficult attempt by the Arewa youths to link every Igbo man with the activities of the IPOB. If it is so, suffice it to say that all of them are members of the Boko Haram sect.

“May we also state that contrary to their claims that Ndigbo were being accommodated in every part of the country, our people have continued to be slaughtered like chickens, especially in the north, without justifiable reason. The case of Mrs. Bridget Agbahime, a pastor’s wife, who was murdered in cold blood will speak against these youths. The manner her case was muzzled by the Kano State Government will make her blood to cry forever against her shameless murderers.

“We, therefore, alert your attention (sic) to another impending massacre of the Igbo, especially with thick rumour of arms being stock-piled in the north in readiness for action. It is even more painful considering un-denied claims that some security personnel were aiding the smuggling of these sophisticated arms through the porous land borders in the north.

“Suffice it to say that the lives of our people are now at a great risk. It does appear that the pogrom of the 60s is here to repeat itself. There are indications that they are only waiting for the whistle to be blown for them to unleash another round of terror on our people.

“Giving the above, we urge the United Nations to beam its satellite on the northern Nigeria ahead of any eventuality that may befall our people. Considering the manner the security agencies have handled these endless threats, it is unlikely that they may protect our people when these marauders will strike.

“Secondly and very importantly too, having seen that Igbo have remained the victims of this marriage called Nigeria, despite our sacrifices, we demand that the on-going constitutional amendment will not be acceptable should it not make provision for a referendum. It is high time people are (sic) given freedom to decide whether they want to remain in a country where they are neither loved nor wanted but hated with passion.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu condemned what it called the distasteful statement credited to the Acting President Osinbajo that exercising their God-given and inalienable right to self determination is in violation of the provisions of the “General Abdulsalami Abubakar 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.”

The group alleged that Osinbajo’s statement confirmed the widely held view that African leaders lack the mental capacity and discipline to operate a constitutional democracy in a modern world, insisting that if the Acting President continued to heed the evil counsel by using threatening language when addressing IPOB, they would be ready to go to prison.

In a statement yesterday in Awka, the Media and Publicity Secretary for IPOB, Emma Powerful argued that if the corrupt ruling class in Nigeria could not distinguish between those rights that are sacrosanct, such as freedom of association and freedom of expression under which IPOB operates, then the entire political edifice in Nigeria is a monumental mess.

IPOB suggested that somebody should draw the attention of Osinbajo to the provisions of the Africa Charter on Human and Peoples Rights which Nigeria ratified and went ahead to domesticate into her local laws.

Meanwhile, Osinbajo has warned that the Federal Government would not hesitate to deploy its agencies against any group that threatens Nigeria’s togetherness and territorial integrity.

Giving the warning at the continuation of the meeting with traditional rulers from the 19 northern states in Abuja yesterday, Osinbajo who is scheduled to meet with the 36 state governors today, also assured that the current administration would not take the diversity of the country for granted.

He appealed to the monarchs to counsel misguided elements among the youths in their domain against ethnic bigotry and other tendencies capable of causing confrontation.

Also yesterday, the 19 northern governors assured Igbo that their lives and property are safe, while demanding the arrest of the youths who gave the quit order.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State who spoke on behalf of the northern governors during a meeting with a delegation of the Igbo Delegate Assembly at the Government House yesterday said the arrest of the Arewa youths who signed the quit notice would serve as a deterrent to others.

While urging Igbo leaders to caution their youths against making inciting statements and agitations capable of dividing Nigeria, he said Kaduna State had abolished indigenship.

“The Arewa youths behind the ultimatum will not only be arrested but will be prosecuted.

“Kaduna State Government is grateful to the Igbo for coming, Kaduna has suffered so much crisis, so we are very sensitive to comments that incite and cause disaffection among the people.

“Kaduna used to be a home for all, but so much crisis has divided the state and the metropolis across religious lines. As a government, that is why we abolish indigeneship, once you live in Kaduna you are an indigene.”

Two weeks after a coalition of northern youths gave the quit notice to Igbo which necessitated calls for their arrest, the police yesterday said they were yet to effect any arrest.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, who spoke to newsmen in Abuja said that so far, no arrest had been made.

The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has said that every Nigerian should consider anywhere he or she resides as his or her home, not minding the quit notice given to Igbo to vacate the North.

Okorocha stated this on Monday night at the Government House, Owerri, while breaking the fast with Muslim faithful, stressing that Nigerians had overgrown such ‘petty sentiments.’

The governor, who admitted that Igbo and Arewa people inter-marry based on his belief, said, among others: “We are here as a tradition to break the fast with our Muslim brothers who have been fasting for so many weeks now. We are here to dramatise unity and love for one another. We Nigerians must learn to respect each other’s religion because religion has a lot to do with every individual or society.

“We should also be our brothers’ keeper as preached by every religion. I want to assure all Muslims in Imo State that you are safe in the state. Let no one leave the state for any reason at all. This is Nigeria and Nigeria is one nation, indivisible and indissoluble.’’

“When we heard about the call by the Arewa youths asking the Igbo to go back home, I said to them which home? Nigeria is our country, Nigeria is our home and as such we must love one another. I tell all of you here that Imo State is your home irrespective of your religion. Feel free and keep the laws of the land because we are one and shall remain one in God’s name.”

Leader of the Muslim community in the state, Alhaji Yusuf Nwaoha and his Abia State counterpart, Alhaji Usman Mohammadu, thanked the governor for sustaining the breaking of fast with Muslim faithful in the state in the past six years and enjoined him to handover the legacy to his successor come 2019. They also commended the government and people of the state for the peaceful co-existence among Christians and Muslims, calling for its sustenance.

In a similar vein, former Vice President Abubakar Atiku, has warned against the break-up of Nigeria. He said the consequences would be catastrophic for all Nigerians.

Atiku, in his Twitter handle entitled “None of us is as great as all of us” monitored yesterday, remarked that Nigerians would be in good stead to fix the multifaceted problems facing Nigeria if the nation remains one indivisible country.

He enjoined those agitating for the break-up of the country to go down history lane to learn the lesson of tolerance and brotherliness.

Meanwhile, former National Chairman of the Traditional Rulers of Oil Minerals Producing Communities of Nigeria (TROMPCON) and paramount ruler of Seimbiri Kingdom, Delta State, His Majesty Pere Charles Ayemi-Botu, yesterday said Nigeria was inching towards self-destruction by the various divisive agitations within the country.

The monarch, who is expected to host a fact-finding team to the Niger Delta from the United States Embassy led by the Consular-General today in his palace, said the time has come to redefine the destiny of Nigeria since majority of Nigerians in the North, South, East and West have unanimously decided for the restructuring or implementation of true fiscal federalism.

Ayemi-Botu said said the timing of the ultimatum given by the northern clique at a time when all patriotic Nigerians are trooping to churches and mosques praying for President Muhammadu Buhari’s quick recovery and safe return to the country was worrisome and unpardonable.

Government ready for immediate Ogoni cleanup, says agency

Ogoni

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has pledged Federal Government’s commitment to immediately begin the cleanup of Ogoniland.

The agency’s Head, Project Coordination, Marvin Dekil, who gave the assurance yesterday at Bodo and K-Dere communities in Gokana Local Council of Rivers State during an enlightenment campaign, noted: “The project is owned by the Federal Government. We need to inform you that the government is ready now to clean up Ogoni and that is why we are reaching out to the communities to sensitise them.”

He went on: “We are about to commence work. We will be visiting the entire site soon. We will be bringing in companies soon with their technology to test what they can do. But, we have not awarded them the job. Anything they do now is from their own money. We will be carrying out training for women, youths and those with requisite knowledge in specialised areas.”

Dekil pledged that members of the communities would be carried along, adding that good water and other amenities captured in the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report are to be made available for the well-being of the people.

“This is your project. No land will be left unattended and we will respect your community and cultural boundaries. We are here to do a thorough job for Ogoni people.

“We will bring people who will examine the drinking water you have here. We will bring people who will visit all the sites to take record so that we commence within next one month,” Dekil pledged.

He further said: “We are here to hear your mind. This is a project for Ogoni people. In this, you don’t seek to participate because you are the owners of the project. The government designed the programme to include environmental remediation; that is, to how to restore the economic life of your people that has been dislocated.

“In the project, provision of water and healthcare is important. We will bring experts all over the world, including Rivers State Ministry of Health to know the health impact of the people and provide treatment where needed.”

Meanwhile, a group, Save Our Ogoni Project, has accused Dekil of bias in the selection of youths for overseas training.

In a statement yesterday by its coordinator, Anthony Aalo, the group claimed that the entire exercise was not inclusive and appeared driven by a particular political party.
