Faulted for incompetent and inability to meet basic standard, the Kano State Ramadan feeding committee, yesterday, withdrew the services of some contractors managing Ramadan feeding in two local government areas.
Though names of the affected contractors were not listed, government cautioned others found wanting to correct their mistakes or face outright sanction.The state Commissioner for Information Mal. Muhammad Garba, while briefing Journalists on the activities since the inception of Ramadan, hinted that over #419million naira had so far spent for the free feeding.
Garba, who affirmed pockets of challenges ranging from poor quality of food to late arrival of items to designated centers among other logistics issues, insisted that government had to instill discipline in the services to ensure desire result.
“Although we have experienced significant improvement in the last 20 days since the feeding commences particularly in the areas of neatness, quality of food, prompt completion of delicacy and consistency.
“But that is not to say everything is 100% accurate we observed some challenges especially in Fagge and Kumbotso local government areas center and that was why we sack the some of the contractors,” Garba said.
Unlike previous years, he disclosed that 2017 feeding program was expanded from 165 to 186 centers across eight local government areas. “We have spent in total #419,207,744 for the feeding.”
Out of the amount state government released #308,354,744 for purchase of food items while the 8 local government councils where the feeding centers reside were directed to contribute #110,854.
“What you see this year is difficult our centers are increased from 165 in 2016 to 186. And our target is to feed at least 250/people”. Garba noted.While soliciting the contributions of wealth individual to compliment government efforts, the commissioner posited that the task of the yearly free feeding couldn’t be more difficult to bear considering the reality of economic situation in the country.
